I'm Still Here!

Sorry for the lack of updating lately. I've been busy with school and figuring out all my plans for when I return to the States. So far, so good: I have an apartment in the Regent Square area (Pittsburgh) with a roommate and 2 bunnies...should be interesting :-)

I am getting used to a lot of crying and screaming in the house from Shun-chan lately. Any time, breakfast or dinner. He's 2, after all....Anyway, when there's silence or he's taking a nap, I'm not used to it!!

I am *finally* getting used to looking to the right when crossing the street, since the cars drive on the opposite directions here than in the U.S. I realize this is going to be one of those many adjustments to deal with when I get back. Yikes!

With a book store gift certificate I received back in October from volunteering with this group of high school kids, I bought a book on Japanese gardens.

I am realizing I could potentially become obsessed with these traditional gardens if I were to stay here longer---I think they are one of the greatest things about Japan. You feel like you are in another world (OK, well, sort of...) when you are there. They are just so beautiful! I visited the Katsura Imperial Villa this past week, which is essentially the most famous garden in all of Japan. To be able to see the place, one has to go all the way to Kyoto to make a reservation in person, in a tiny office in the parking lot next to the Imperial Palace. And the reservation is for at least a week in advance. It's hard to get reservations for the Japanese people because so many foreigners get to go---but it didn't seem that way on the tour: I was one of 3 gaijin (foreigner) in a group of about 30 people. Anyway, I will post pictures of Katsura in the next post!
That's it for now.
Monica
